Jo’s Blog: Hotels that do good – Attitude in Mauritius

In a world where sustainability often feels more like a buzzword than a genuine practice, finding a hotel chain that truly walks the walk is refreshing.

In 2017, I had the privilege of discovering Attitude Hotels during a work trip, when they were just beginning to make their mark on Mauritius with a small collection of properties. Fast forward to today, and Attitude has grown into a trusted brand with eight superb 3* and 4* hotels across the island, catering to both families and adults.

During my first visit, I was fortunate to stay at two fabulous properties: The Ravenala Attitude on the west coast and Zilwa Attitude on the northeast. Both hotels left a lasting impression on me, and I’ve since had great success recommending them to my clients, who always return with glowing reviews.

Of course, the beautiful beaches, bluer-than-blue pools, and dine-around options are reason enough but it’s Attitude’s unwavering commitment to not only providing an unforgettable holiday experience but also making a positive impact on the local community, economy and environment that resonates.

From the reusable Dopper water bottles loaned to guests, to rooms furnished with locally made crafts, Attitude is a shining example of how to do tourism right.

There is no single-use plastic in the guest experience, so if you want coffee, tea, sugar and snacks for your room, you can visit the Bulk Shop and stock up using the reusable glass jars.

Fresh fruit and salad are grown by the local Mayaven family, local bands are given the spotlight to perform, and the spa uses 100% natural ingredients that are grown locally in the island’s lush La Vallée de Ferney.

If you’re passionate about the ocean, make sure to visit the Marine Discovery Centre at Lagoon Attitude. Run by a team of friendly marine biologists, it’s the perfect spot to dive into the island’s underwater world. You can even get involved in cool projects like snapping photos of humpback whales on an eco-friendly whale-watching trip.

While you’re there, why not paddle through the mangroves on a kayaking tour, explore their snorkelling trail or get creative in an upcycling art class?

Otentik Experiences

One of the standout features of Attitude Hotels is their commitment to authentic, local experiences through their Otentik programme. This thoughtful initiative invites guests to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Mauritius, offering activities that truly connect you to the island. Here are two experiences that left a lasting impression on me...

Otentik Dinner

Roll up your sleeves and get hands-on in the kitchen, sharing stories and laughs as you whip up a feast with island locals. And don’t be surprised if the evening ends with some dancing or live music – Mauritian hospitality at its best!

Otentik Discovery

Explore the street food scene in Port Louis. Attitude Hotels even has its own app that makes it super easy to explore the island. Use it to do a self-guided walking tour of Port Louis - you won’t want to miss the street food and some seriously cool street art along the way.

The Attitude Hotels

Each of the eight Attitude Hotels offers something unique, but here are my personal favourites based on my own experiences:

The Ravenala Attitude: A tropical retreat for all

The Ravenala Attitude is an all-suite resort, perfect for families and couples alike. The spacious rooms and the exclusive adults-only section, complete with personalised bean bag loungers on the beach, make it a versatile and inviting option for all kinds of travellers.

The west coast location means you’re in for some of the most spectacular sunsets you can imagine, all while enjoying a wide range of dining options through their fantastic dine-around program.

Zilwa Attitude: A slice of island paradise

Over on the northeast coast, Zilwa Attitude stands out with its contemporary décor, including chic polished concrete floors and family-style rooms. One of its most unique features is the private island, Grand Zil, just a short pontoon ride away. Whether you’re enjoying a BBQ or simply lounging in this exclusive setting, it’s an experience that adds an extra layer of magic to your stay.

A birthday to remember at Sunrise Attitude and Lagoon Attitude

In 2022, I returned to Mauritius to celebrate my 50th birthday and stayed at two more Attitude properties: Sunrise Attitude on the east coast and Lagoon Attitude on the north coast. These experiences only made me appreciate even more what Attitude stands for.

Sunrise Attitude

Sunrise Attitude is all about reconnecting with nature. The hotel is located on what I believe is the best beach on the island, Belle Mare Plage.

As an adults-only resort and digital detox concept, it offers a tranquil escape with the option of swim-up rooms or private pool villas, making it an ideal choice for honeymooners or those seeking some well-deserved relaxation.

And at Sunrise Attitude, there’s nothing quite like starting your day on the beach. You can pop on your headphones, let the DJ’s tunes slowly build with the rising sun, and just go with the flow - dance, relax, or simply soak in the incredible energy of nature waking up.

Lagoon Attitude

Lagoon Attitude is another adults-only gem, nestled on the north coast, offering easy access to popular spots like Bain Boef and Grand Baie. While the beach here is smaller, the beautifully appointed rooms and intimate setting make it a wonderful choice for couples looking for a romantic getaway.

What I truly appreciate about Attitude Hotels is their consistency in delivering affordable luxury without compromising on quality. They’ve become a Jo Shayler Holidays firm favourite, not just for me but for my clients as well. The brand’s commitment to sustainability, local engagement and providing an authentic Mauritian experience is superb.

If you’re considering a trip to Mauritius, I can’t recommend Attitude Hotels enough. Their unique blend of style, comfort and genuine hospitality ensures you’ll have a memorable stay, whether it’s your first visit or a return to this beautiful island.

They are excitingly also expanding their horizons, with a new property set to open in Zanzibar in 2025. I’ll be keeping a close eye on this and will share more news in due course.

For more details or to plan your own Attitude experience, feel free to get in touch - I’d love to help you discover the magic of Mauritius.
